Welcome to Centres of Excellence - Japanese
Centres of Excellence - Japanese Stage 5 & 6
Committed to Education
The Japanese Centre of Excellence (JCoE) was established in 2019 by Sydney Catholic Schools to ensure that the opportunity for all students of Sydney Catholic schools to study Japanese language is available to them.
Each year schools offer a wide range of subjects for students to choose as their electives in Stage 5 & 6. From year to year individual schools can struggle to run certain elective courses due to the level of interest shown by their students in the subject selection process. In 2022 the JCoE aims to enrol students from across Sydney Catholic Schools who wish to study the Japanese language stage 5 & 6 courses.

What’s the Buzz
Japan Bunka Club
The Nippon Bunka Club (Japan Club) was very successful in 2020 – often attracting 15-20 students per session, the majority of whom were truly interested in the activities and/or learning more about Japanese culture.
K-6 Japanese Program
Sydney Catholic Schools will roll out a new ‘Kindergarten to Year 12’ language program to ensure that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the jobs of the future. Under the program, Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) is the first system to provide students the resources they need to continue studies across their entire education and be fluent in a second language by the time they leave school.

Language Course Opportunities
Stage 5 - Japanese Course
The study of Japanese provides access to the language and culture of one of the global community’s most technologically advanced societies and economies. Students engage with elements of modern Japan, including popular culture such as anime, manga, music and fashion, as well as with the rich cultural tradition of this part of Asia. Students develop an appreciation for the place of Australia within the Asia region, including the interconnections of languages and cultures, peoples and communities, histories and economies.
Stage 6 Beginners Japanese - Online Course
In the Preliminary and HSC courses, students will develop the linguistic and intercultural knowledge and understanding, and the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to communicate in Japanese. Topics studied through two interdependent perspectives, the personal world and the Japanese-speaking communities, provide contexts in which students develop their communication skills in Japanese and their knowledge and understanding of language and culture. Students’ skills in, and knowledge of, Japanese will be developed through tasks associated with a range of texts and text types, which reflect the topics. Students will also gain an insight into the culture and language of Japanese-speaking communities through the study of a range of texts.
